Completion and Creation

People don't want other people to guess they never knew what they wanted in the first place.
-- Albertine, speaking in Lillian Hellman's
Toys in the Attic (1959)

It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters,  in the end.
       -- Ursula K. LeGuin,
The Left Hand of Darkness (1969)

Dear Friend,

What a wonderful time of year.  We've had that a lot of "winter wonderland" weather this year, and I love it.  Syracuse, where I live in central NY, has been getting its fair share of fractal white seasonal solid phase H2O (i.e., snow), 71.8 inches this season.  I've been out cross-country skiing five times (Yay!), if only in the greenspace running past my neighborhood.  It's been nippy outside, more than last year, for sure.  And though I'm going to regret it when the utility bill comes, I've been taking the time to enjoy what's available to me.

'Tis the New Year
Are you one of the 179 people in the English-speaking world who make and keep New Year's Resolutions?  I'm not.  In fact, I haven't bothered to do so in years.  For me, and for most people, I think, resolutions set on the new year are imbued with too much hope and not enough planning and support.

While goals are important, there is a lot that goes into making goals that stick.  I wrote about a 6-step strategy for creating and reaching goals in a slightly longer and more complex article I published three years ago.  At that time, people were not only celebrating the turning of the year, but the turning of the millennium.  You can find that article on my website by clicking here.

Completion and Creation
Here's an exercise for you to close out the year and look prospectively toward the future.  I wish to thank Madeleine Homan of Coaching.com for passing it on to me with permission to distribute it.  I love the simplicity with which it leads one to think about what really matters.

Just Creation
Below is a link to a form created and used by coach and entrepreneur Thomas Leonard.
Life Designer - 2003 is just 2 pages long, and includes sections to write in:

  • your 25 Biggest Opportunities/Goals
  • 25 Tweaks to your "Environments"
  • 25 Cool Things to Do For Yourself During 2003
  • 10 Ways to Simplify Your Life
  • your 10 Daily Habits

The form is in PDF format, and is available at my website at http://www.stevereiter.com/forms/lifedesigner2003pdf.pdf.  You'll need to have Acrobat Reader to open the document.  It's available for free from adobe.com.

Magic?
These two resources are simple and convenient and help us focus our thoughts.  But they're not magic.  The magic is in granting yourself permission to sit down long enough to think effectively about where you've been, what you've done, where you are, where you want to go, and how you're going to get there.

And, of course, there is the importance of support and continuity.
Is it possible to have a surplus of support in your life?  What could you accomplish if you didn't have to "do it alone?"  How much easier do you think that might be?  How much faster would you reach your goals?  What would the value of that support be?

So get the support that will ensure your success.  Hire a coach (give me a call!).  Conspire with your friends to commit to each other's success.  There is only so much time left.

To the New Year!  To the New You!

Cheers.

     Steve
