Cutting Yourself Some Slack

Dear Friend,

The content for this week's Letter had been coming together in my head over the last week or so.  But it will have to wait.

I've got two excuses
Are they good excuses?  I really can't tell anymore.  But, at the moment, they work for me!  And I've decided to cut myself some slack.  So here's what's up.

Last week I learned that my older daughter had blacked out for a short time, for no apparent reason.  An EEG was scheduled and it turns out that it was abnormal.  Fear started swimming around in my mind.

An MRI was scheduled for yesterday morning.  The fear put on a SCUBA tank and fins and really went to town!

I sat down to write this newsletter and... nothing.   Well, not exactly nothing.  I checked and responded to e-mails at least two dozen times.  I prepared some packages for mailing.  I had a lunch engagement to which I walked.  (That was good; at least I got some exercise.)  And I believe I was able to attend well to the good person across the table.

After lunch
... still no article.

An appointment with the neurologist is scheduled for the very next day!  Now, just what must THAT mean?

My daughter said, "What's the use of worrying before you know for sure there's something wrong.  Then you can worry!"

It's something I do that goes above and beyond mere concern, I tell her.

Last night I turned on the tube (which I hardly ever do), and ate much more than too many chocolate covered walnuts from Trader Joe's (which, though sitting in the cupboard since Thanksgiving, were surprisingly fresh).

Today: Meeting with the neurologist
Without getting into the nitty gritty, let me just say that it appears all is well.

This afternoon
My nose erupted under the spell of (yet another) cold.

Tonight
I'm going to go to bed early.  I'm going to write my next article as regularly scheduled.  And I'm not going to sweat it.   And I'm not going to apologize.  Hah!

Your turn

  • Where in your life can you cut yourself loose from the chains of your to-do list(s) and what you expect of yourself?
  • What do you believe will happen if you don't look perfect?
  • What do you have to learn from slowing down?
  • What are you afraid of facing if you were to slow down?
  • What questions can you ask yourself that would have more power for you than the ones I've asked?
  • What actions can you take that would challenge the way you typically deal with time and responsibility?
  • Why am I continuing to write these questions when I should be going to bed?
