What is Coaching?
Definitions and description
Various reasons people choose to be coached
How it works
Definitions
First, I offer you two definitions from coaching organizations:
"Professional coaching is an ongoing partnership that helps clients produce fulfilling results in their
personal and professional lives. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their
performance, and enhance their quality of life.
"In each meeting, the client chooses the focus of conversation, while the coach listens and contributes observations
and questions. This interaction creates clarity and moves the client into action.
"Coaching accelerates the client's progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. Coaching concentrates
on where clients are today and what they are willing to do to get where they want to be tomorrow."
- The International Coach Federation
"Coaching is a powerful alliance designed to forward and enhance the lifelong process of human learning, effectiveness,
and fulfillment."
- The Coaches Training Institute
To these descriptions, I will add that coaching is a relationship that is held specifically to support the client's
movement toward a goal. What that goal looks like varies between clients, and within the same client over time.

Various reasons people choose to be coached
For you, it might be, I'd like a new career, more time, a different character to my relationships, more control
over my finances, fewer wrinkles (just checking to see you're still with me), or a host of other possibilities.
Perhaps, you have a lack of clarity about your life, raising questions such as What next?, What is my "purpose",
How do I build a life based on my values? or even What ARE my values?
Your quest might be to "show up" differently in your life, either in your work life or personal life.
You might want to be more visible, more dynamic, more sensitive to others, or more like a coach.
I think that one of my most valuable qualities as a coach is my commitment to the growth and well-being of my
clients. It's not only the joy of watching great people "take off." It's about the connection that develops
and the support that flows from that connection. I just love this work.

How it works
Coaching is usually done on the phone, at agreed-upon times, for 30 to 45 minutes weekly.
An extended "intake" allows us to explore together:
- who is in your life
- what resources are available to you right now
- what I need to know and do to be the best coach for you
- how satisfied you are with the different aspects of your life (e.g., career, family, community)
- what do you value in your life (e.g., truth, beauty, frivolity, spiritual connection) and
how is that expressed.
- what is your Life Purpose (That is, what would your life well-lived look like?)
- your goals and how they honor your values
- steps toward achieving your goals
I have a toll-free number for those clients who need to call from an office, who are out-of-town, or who are
travelling. For regular users, there is an additional fee to cover the cost for your calls; in most cases, it is
the least expensive alternative.
